Before heading to the airport, we had our last complimentary breakfast at the hotel complete with eggs, egg noodles, curry, mashed taro, pasta, cous cous, and an extensive variety of fruit, cakes and pastries - you name it we ate it. We then had a nice tuk-tuk ride to the airport. We didn't have enough cash on us to tip our tuk-tuk driver but offered him an American dollar coin which he happily accepted and said he'd keep as a souvenir. As we waited to board our flight, we listed to Taylor Swift playing on the radio at our gate.
Our flight was uneventful and we were welcomed to Chiang Mai with this awesome view:
We arrived at our hostel, Green Tulip House, in the late afternoon and were greeted by friendly staff. They recommended we walk over to Night Bazaar, a humongous market about 30 minutes away, for dinner. So we did just that. On the way, we saw some pretty parks and rivers. Chiang Mai is a big city but is very green and has a small village feel to it.
We quickly learned that the street food we had heard about was no joke. We sat down to eat at "Aisha" - we felt we could trust it because it drew quite a large crowd. We were seated next to two 31 year old women from China, and they were very friendly so we ended up chatting with them for about an hour. Penny owns a marble business in China and the other woman, whose name we never learned, owns a bar. They came to Thailand for a long weekend because the flights were cheap and its only a two hour flight.
We finished our basil chicken, garIic naan, pineapple fried rice, and Chang beers and asked for the check. It was a whopping $4 for all our food and $5 for the beer. On our way home, we walked in the wrong direction for 25 minutes and then had to turn around, but it was totally worth it because we made another friend who may or may not be coming home with us:
